Why to Replace Your AC System

AC Repair

Have you been thinking about making an investment to replace your AC system? Many people start to think about getting a new AC when they start to experience air conditioner breakdowns. However, you might want to think about getting a new air conditioner even if yours still seems to be working well. Older air conditioners may be outdated, and a newer, more efficient model may end up saving you money in the long-term.

How old is your air conditioner?

The first thing to consider is the age of your system. Under normal use conditions, air conditioners last 10 to 15 years, with well-maintained systems lasting even longer. Of course, in the Phoenix area with our extreme high temps and dusty air, even well-maintained systems get a lot of wear and tear. If your air conditioner is ten years or older, you may want to consider replacement.

What are your current utility bills with the existing AC system?

Have you noticed that you are using more and more energy to keep your home cool? If so, you may be experiencing a loss of efficiency in your system. It is also possible that when your AC was installed, it was not the right size. Many builders use a standard size AC unit, which may not be right for your home. If your AC unit is too small or too large, it will not work efficiently. So, if your utility bills seem higher than they should be, you may need a more efficient system.

Are you facing an expensive repair?

Just because your AC is broken and needs a repair does not mean you need replacement. A repair by a certified HVAC technician can keep a well-maintained unit running well for years. However, if you are facing an expensive repair or if you have multiple problems with the system, it may be a waste of money to pay for a repair. Instead, you want to compare the cost of a repair to the cost of replacement, including the money you will save because of increased efficiency.

Do you use R-22 Freon?

If your air conditioner is over ten years old, it may use R-22 Freon. Since 2020, we cannot produce R-22 Freon in the U.S. That means that even a simple problem, like a refrigerant leak, can turn into a very expensive repair. As the supply of R-22 gets smaller, those repairs are only going to get more expensive, and it will eventually be impossible to find that type of coolant. That makes replacing your AC system the only option
