The county seat, Florence is a National Historic District with 25 buildings on the National Register of Historic Places. Founded by American Civil War Veteran Levi Ruggles, Florence can trace its early history to both agriculture and silver mining. Nearby Adamsville was founded in 1870 but destroyed by a flood in the 1990s. The citizens of Adamsville moved to Florence, and the area that was once Adamsville has become a ghost town. Ghost towns are only part of the interesting history of Florence. It was also the sight of a famous gunfight between Sheriff Pete Gabriel and his deputy Joe Phy, onetime friends and colleagues who got into a fight that turned into a gunfight. It was also where outlaw Pearl Heart faced trail for stagecoach robbery. Florence’s colorful history makes it one of our favorite destinations in the greater Phoenix metro area.
